TEXAS CITY — A man convicted of murder in the death of Luis Joel Gonzales-Sosa was sentenced to life in prison.
A jury convicted Ronnie Roshell Johnson, 21, of murder Monday afternoon. The jury then deliberated for more than an hour before sentencing Johnson on Monday evening to life in prison, prosecutor Jennifer Ott said.
The evening Gonzales-Sosa was killed, he was in his pickup with two other men, one of whom was passed out, Ott said.
Gonzales-Sosa and his conscious passenger sought help from Johnson in finding a prostitute. Johnson, in an attempt to rob the men, shot Gonzales-Sosa, and his two passengers fled, Ott said.
Texas City police found Gonzales-Sosa’s body slumped over the steering wheel May 19, 2007, on a set of railroad tracks in the 400 block of 10th Avenue North.
In Johnson’s punishment hearing, jurors learned he was on probation for a state jail felony on cocaine possession, Ott said.
Johnson received deferred adjudication on his guilty plea, which meant the felony wasn’t part of his record, Ott said.
A gang expert with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office testified Johnson was at some point a member of the Bloods, Ott said.
