With District 24-4A baseball competition under way and 24-5A set to begin Tuesday, several local teams are getting one final tune-up with the Texas City Tournament beginning today.
Dubbed the “Oldest Tournament in Texas,” this year’s three-day event will feature 10 teams, its largest field ever.
With the addition of more teams, the tournament now will be played at Dickinson High School along with Texas City’s Robinson Stadium.
“We did this to get more teams involved,” Texas City coach Mike Schwager said. “We wanted some more options so we aren’t playing the same teams over and over.
“We were able to draw some more teams by playing at Dickinson, too.”
Joining Texas City in the tournament are Dickinson and Santa Fe. Also competing are Foster, Fort Bend Elkins, Channelview, Seven Lakes, Aldine, Fort Bend Baptist and Clear Lake.
Texas City started off district play with a victory against Manvel, but Schwager said it will be good to get a few more games experience before facing the bulk of the district schedule.
Each team is playing four games in the tournament.
