LEAGUE CITY — A controversial former city administrator will soon head neighboring Nassau Bay.
Chris Reed, who in June stepped down as League City’s city administrator, has been hired as the new city manager there. He’ll start work Aug. 17.
Reed, 40, resigned in mid-June as city council members weighed his job performance behind closed doors. His resignation ended months of speculation that Mayor Toni Randall wanted him gone. The two had a tense relationship since Randall took office.
As specified in his contract, Reed got $211,000 in severance pay from League City.
As the city manager of Nassau Bay, Reed will earn $140,550 a year plus a $600 monthly car allowance. The city also will spend $10,000 to move Reed, his wife and three children to Nassau Bay, City Secretary Pat Jones said.
Nassau Bay has been without a permanent city manager since John Kennedy retired in late May. In a reversal of roles, Reed as city manager will be the boss of Tommy Cones, a former League City council member who worked alongside Reed.
As Reed takes the position in Nassau Bay, League City continues its search for a permanent replacement for Reed.
Council members said they hoped to lure an experienced city administrator to help manage growth, which is expected to double in population by 2025.
Reed could not be reached for comment.
League City Councilman Neil Baron said he’s happy for Reed.
“Our loss is Nassau Bay’s gain,” he said.
