Give Jack Johnson A Place To Stay
Why does honoring a historic, famous and native Galvestonian have to be so complicated?
I would think most would agree that Jack Johnson is entitled to a place in the city’s history. Johnson was a bigger-than-life person who overcame hatred, fear and ignorance to become a champion.
He suffered cruel persecution for daring to go against norms to achieve what was his birthright and his right as a citizen according to the Constitution of the United States.
Having a visible, public tribute to him with an explanatory plaque would be an act of redemption for all of Galveston.

Go Back To Your Home, Atkins
In response to Ivana Atkins’ guest column “Americans don’t know meaning of socialism” (The Daily News, Oct. 17): If socialism isn’t so bad, and she and eight out of 10 people here from Yugoslavia are “nostalgic for it,” why don’t the eight of them go back to Yugoslavia?
No one is making her stay here to enjoy the freedoms our American men and women fought and died for so we would not have to live in a socialistic country.

Constitution, Rights Must Be Protected
Thank you for printing John Dreiss’ column “Fox balance beats Socialist hatred” (The Daily News, Oct. 23). I’ve wondered recently whether The Daily News was presenting political views of both liberals and conservatives.
I respect Ivana Atkins’ views in her column “Americans don’t know meaning of socialism” (The Daily News, Oct. 17) but, having worked overseas for three years with Macedonians, Albanians, Bosnians and Hungarians, I also know that most of the ones I worked with were happy to be out pursuing a better life for their families, by being able to make money they would never be able to make and keep in their own countries.
I suspect there are probably many immigrants who feel differently to Atkins but also respect her American right to express her opinion. She wouldn’t be able to do that without fear in her birth country.
And thanks to Dreiss for revealing the Saul Alinsky plot being used by our present administration to deceive us. We mustn’t be apathetic and stick our heads in the sand. Regardless of our political views, we are Americans and must protect our Constitution and the rights it gives us.

Trailer Safety Is A Must
Recently, a letter to the editor was published titled “Trailer safety is being ignored on our roads” (The Daily News, Oct. 8).
Our organization, Dangeroustrailers.org, couldn’t agree more. Our roadways have become even more dangerous due to this unchecked industry.
Regulations aren’t in place for any utility trailer just 1 pound under 3,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. There isn’t any training, no inspections and a trailer can even be built by you.
Our organization has been trying to address this ongoing concern for almost seven years. I urge Daily News readers to go to dangeroustrail
ers.org, and the next time they’re out and about, to take notice of the countless number of trailers being hauled daily on our roadways.
If they look closely, they’ll see many are improperly attached to the tow vehicle, don’t have working lights, safety chains and are unacceptably maintained.
They should then ask themselves: “Why am I riding behind or next to this person trying to kill or injure my family and me?”

Galveston To Mimic Savannah
Your editorial about revitalizing downtown Galveston prompted me to write.
Several weeks ago, my wife and I spent time in Savannah, Ga. It is a beautiful city full of tourists and bustling with great restaurants, shops and tours.
I commented more than once that Galveston could be like this. Galveston has as much history and as many beautiful 19th-century homes. Savannah has a riverfront but it does not have a beach. Savannah has great restaurants, like Galveston. The historic district is no more appealing than The Strand area.
I recommend city planners study Savannah as a model for making Galveston the true destination point it deserves to be.
As a BOI, I have always boosted Galveston and would love to see it blossom even more.
