Q: National Flood Insurance Program policies have a 60-day deadline for filing a proof of loss statement. Our insurance agents and adjusters tell us that an extension has been granted, but I can find nothing in writing. Can you find out if we have an extension?
A: Policyholders typically have 60 days to file an initial proof of loss statement, which is an itemized list of damaged property that may be covered by a National Flood Insurance Program policy. The initial list need not be complete and can be amended as time passes and new damage is discovered.
In the case of Hurricane Ike damage, the deadline has been extended to 180 days, six months, from the day of the loss, which for most people will have occurred on Sept. 12-13. So people have until mid-March to file the statements.
The best way to file a statement is to contact the person or company that sold you the policy.
