Q: Will UTMB reopen the Children’s Hospital?
A: There are no plans at this time to reopen the Children’s Hospital at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
UTMB will open a clinic to provide primary pediatric care with some specialty children’s services on the UTMB campus beginning in December. A 24-hour urgent care facility for children, a newborn nursery and the neonatal intensive care unit are already in operation. When the hospital opens additional inpatient beds, some of those beds will be designated for pediatric patients.
The university does not plan to reopen the pediatric intensive care unit at UTMB. Children with complex medical and surgical problems will be transferred to hospitals on the mainland.
All pediatric specialty services will be offered in UTMB clinics on the mainland.
These include cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, psychology, developmental pediatrics, restorative and rehabilative care services, adolescent medicine, nephrology, endocrinology/diabetes and infectious diseases.
Also, genetics, hematology/oncology, pediatric urology, pediatric surgery, pediatric orthopedic surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, pediatric otolaryngology, cleft palate and pediatric radiology.
