Krewe’s goodies go to our troops

The Afghanistan Project, a Krewe of Gambrinus program, found 77 boxes of goodies on their way to our troops in Afghanistan.
Hita Dixon headed up the program for donating boxes of Christmas cards that were given out at “Bead Store Day.” (BSD is when new beads for next MG are in!)
The krewe’s board members held a joint signing of all the cards, thanks to Janis Lowe and Wilma Frye.
Mary Catherine and Joe Tambrella and Charna Graber joined Janet and Carolyn Urbani in Janet’s basement, where they wrote labels, custom forms (times 77) and packed.
Sherry Black, Ed Linquist, Janis and Charna joined in to load Janis’ “Queenmobile” for the trip to the post office.
An excellent post-office clerk named Belinda weighed and labeled boxes for almost three hours.
Most of the people waiting in line all this time were pretty tolerant of having only one other clerk to handle their needs when they realized what it was the krewesters were doing. One man even donated $10 to help with the postage.
Yes, there are a lot of nice people in this world.
The krewe had nearly $500 donated toward the cost of the postage, which came to $1,099.14 (Janet had estimated $1,100 — is she good or what?).
Janet Morgan and Carolyn Urbani co-chaired the project, which proved Gambrinus reallllly has a great krewe family.
Some Light Re-leaf For Tree Lovers
Making the Baby Apple a green apple once more is the Galveston Island Tree Conservancy committee (consisting of Jackie Cole, Cathy Conlon Townsend, Michael Merrritt, Mary Jo Singleton, Ed Sulzberger, Margaret Canavan, Janet Hausinger, John Gorman, David Schuler, Steve Conway and Kat Joel) and the city of Galveston’s tree committee.
Together, they are holding “Galveston Re-leaf’s Free Tree Giveaway” on Saturday.
So why not help them reforest our wonderful island, 2,000 trees at a time.
Volunteers are needed to load trees and to offer planting advice. Contact David Schuler at 409-599-7578 to help.
Donations to assist with replanting Galveston will be gratefully accepted.
Free trees will soon be available at the city hall parking lots for island property owners who lost trees to Ike’s salty surge last year.
The trees were donated by the Tree Folk of Austin, Apache Foundation and Randalls.
You’ll need an ID and a city utility bill to receive two of a variety of tree species, selected especially for Galveston.
Large species include live oak, Mexican white oak, Mexican sycamore, and sweet gum. Smaller species include mountain laurel, Mexican plum, loblolly pine and a fruited pear, all potted in five-gallon containers.
Natch, planting and care instructions will be provided, and free mulch from the city’s recycling center will be available.
