Gilmore Elementary School considered having a golf tournament for a fundraiser, but it didn’t seem like something that would appeal to both students and adults. That’s when Wayne Baetz, whose son, Elijah, 6, attends the school, came up with a good idea — disc golf.
Well, actually he ripped off the idea from another organization, but that’s cool. That’s how these things work. It’s all for a good cause.
The first Gilmore Elementary School Family Fun Frisbee Golf Day will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Walter Hall Park in League City.
Baetz, who helped organize the event, said two 18-hole courses have been designed using trees as “holes,” since the park doesn’t have an official course. He expects about 300 to 400 participants.
“We sent about 2,000 discs home with every student and a reminder about the event,” he said. “It’s a little marketing tool.”
Tee times are every five minutes, and Baetz doesn’t expect any problems for those who show up needing a tee time on the day of the event.
Tee times are $6 for children and $9 for adults as of today. Add a dollar to each if you sign up for a tee time Saturday. Ages 4 and younger can play free.
Proceeds go to the school’s PTA, which will use the money for programs and projects at the school.
It’s not a tournament, just a fun day in the park. There will be food, door prizes and a hole-in-one prize.
Ironically, Baetz won’t be able to attend the event. He trains salespeople at auto dealerships throughout the country, and he was called on for a two-week road trip. He was in Boston on Thursday, and he’ll be in Virginia Beach today and Saturday.
As a result, he’s had to rely on his volunteers to help put the event together.
“Luckily, they stepped up and took a big role when I had to leave town,” he said. “It’ll be a lot of fun. I’ll miss it.”

Hill Makes Early Exit At PALs
Kasim Howard of St. Augustine, Fla., beat Dickinson’s Eugene Hill by a 9-6 decision in a super heavyweight bout Oct. 4 at the national Police Activities League championships in Oxnard, Calif.
Hill wasn’t too happy with the outcome. He was convinced he had won the fight.
“It was an easy fight, too, man,” he said. “Me and my coach thought I won. I had the bigger punches. I was aggressive. I kept coming. The entire fight, he might have hit me with three jabs.”
Hill won his first fight, a 22-4 decision over Henry Namauu of Las Vegas on Oct. 3.
Howard had a first-round walkover Oct. 3.
Jonte Willis beat Howard, 12-1, in the semifinals before falling, 10-8, to Michael Hunter in the finals.
Both Willis and Hill are teammates on the USA Boxing Team.
Hill will accompany Team USA on Oct. 25-27 for a bout in Canada.
