Agents In A Sordid Issue
Tom Sparks’ letter regarding President Bush’s border policy (“Border arrests are last straw for GOP support,” The Daily News, March 1) hit a nerve. His only mistake was asserting that no Republican congressmen has risen to defend agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.
Congressmen Ted Poe, John Culberson and Mike McCaul have called for a congressional investigation of this sordid affair.
The real mystery lies in why Bush remains so unresponsive to widespread inquiries about this matter.
Ramos and Compean languish in prison, while our borders are a running sore. Their cause screams for justice.

A Gentleman, Indeed
On March 4, an honest and concerned gentleman rescued my purse from a basket at Wal-Mart. Because I did not get to thank him personally, I am using this means to tell him how much I appreciate his quick actions and prompt return of my purse, everything intact, as it had been before I carelessly forgot it.
I was so busy taking care of plants I had just bought that, for a few moments, everything else was forgotten.
Sir, you know who you are. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your prompt actions.

Galveston resident Travis Buford, 23, died in Iraq. His mother, Janet Buford, said: “He wanted to go. He was excited to go. He wanted to make sure those people who caused 9/11 and those who want to kill Americans don’t get the chance to come over here. He wanted to do what was right.”
Travis’ Mother Gave Him A Beautiful Tribute
What a beautiful tribute quoted by Janet Buford who lost her son in Iraq (“Galveston soldier dies in Iraq explosion,” The Daily News, Feb. 26).
Travis Buford was a true American soldier who died fighting in a foreign country so that we can enjoy our freedom.
I thank Jesus Christ every day for all of our military men who have volunteered to defend our country on foreign soil.
I pray for our president, George W. Bush, that he does not “cut and run” from the terrorists who hate Americans.
Sept. 11 proved that they do have “weapons of mass destruction,” killing 3,000 Americans in one day.
Thank you, Mrs. Buford, for sharing your story of a precious life given so that we may be free.
That’s what being a true American is all about.
God bless America.

In a recent column, Daily News President and Publisher Dolph Tillotson wrote: “Galveston quickly is becoming a place some people will want to visit but where very few normal, middle-class families will want to live.”
Daily News Has Been On The Side Of Development
Dolph Tillotson’s and The Daily News’ newfound interest in the threatened Galveston middle class is interesting.
Have the subscription rates at The Daily News suddenly plummeted?
Or has Tillotson suddenly woken up?
I guess the tourists aren’t buying newspapers.
This new concern is interesting, given that The Daily News for the past 15 years has supported every tourist scheme, big developer and tourist-industry-friendly candidate for office who came along.
The Daily News has favored the tourism industry and development over the Galveston residential community and infrastructure needs while Galveston middle-class families have been exiting the island en masse.
The Daily News needs to focus on the problems and needs of the people and families who live on the island and work toward fostering a community, not an industry.
Welcome to the island, Tillotson. Now become part of the solution.

Financial markets reacted to reports that former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan had used the word “recession.”
Recession And War Are Not Usually A Couple
Tsk, tsk, Alan Greenspan — a recession amid the two-front war we’re fighting.
Of course, as Greenspan said, it’s “possible,” but topsy-turvy when weighed against most of the wars America has fought.
To be sure, our former monetary chieftain hadn’t been born yet when we fought World War I, triggering a gigantic economic boom in the United States.
And he was but a kid on a bicycle — not yet a teenager — during the super-boom of World War II that quickly ended the Great Depression of the 1930s.
In fact, offhand, it’s difficult to recall a recession taking place amid one of our major wars.
Oh and, incidentally, all of the young investors should know that our most calamitous stock market dives off the cliff never happened in wartime but during relative peace, such as the 508-point plunge of the Dow-Jones Industrials in October 1987, when Greenspan was the Federal Reserve chairman, and the 1929 crash that brought on the Great Depression.
The big plummets of the market in the early 2000s, again when Greenspan headed the banking and monetary agency, took place months before Sept. 11.
So, is a recession possible? Everything is always possible — even the end of the world. I wouldn’t bet on it, though.

Workers Should Be Free To Choose A Union
I would like to give my thanks to the 241 members of the U.S. House of Representatives for approving the Employee Free Choice Act.
This act can help working people provide a better life for their families.
We are closer than we have been in the past 70 years to having labor laws that will truly protect the worker’s freedom to make a choice.
A choice whether a union would be right for them and their families, without having to worry about retribution or coercion from employers.
America’s middle class is on the brink of destruction.
President Bush has threatened to veto the bill. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has threatened members of the House who supported the act.
Both the president and the chamber did not learn very much from the recent elections. I think voters will speak again on this issue.
Eighteen Republican members of the House voted for the act. I think they get it.
America is about freedom of choice. Lives have been sacrificed for that freedom.
I encourage all working people to contact Rep. Ron Paul at 361-576-1231 and let him know that the freedom to make a choice is not too much to ask in America, the land of the free.
