The book has many contributors. The story is told mainly in photographs, which came from a variety of sources.

It wasn't supposed to hit us, but when Galveston residents awoke Sept. 11, 2008, Hurricane Ike was bearing down on them, churning a storm surge that would flood 80 percent of the island and force changes the likes of which hadn't been seen since another, unnamed storm struck more than 100 years earlier.

A boat rests in the parking lot near Galveston's Pier 21.

Ike was the most expensive hurricane in Texas history, causing an estimated $11.4 billion in damage across 29 counties. The city of Galveston estimated that 75 percent of island buildings sustained flood damage.

This is the story of the storm, documented by The Galveston County Daily News photographers, reporters, editors and readers — a storm that will prove to be a historic milestone and will alter the course of the area's future.

"Ike: Stories of the Storm" is a full-color book that tells the story of 2008's Hurricane Ike from beginning to end. The book includes a full account of the storm, its formation and path, the destruction it caused, plus the evacuation and Galveston's road to recovery.
