GALVESTON — Landry’s employees and their families put Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier workers to the test Sunday as they prepare for the official opening.

Galveston County’s best place to watch the Super Bowl?
By Jordan Godwin |  | (7)
We’re working on a story that will provide readers the best spots around Galveston County to watch the upcoming Super Bowl, and we need your help.

I’m sure there are several great spots on the island to watch the big game, and I’m guessing League City offers a few other options. Where did you watch the Super Bowl between the Packers and Steelers last year? I know a lot of people host their own Super Bowl parties at their houses these days, but we’re looking for the best local business to watch the game.

Throw out a few suggestions, and we’ll see what we come up with. Local business and bar owners, feel free to promote your own joint by commenting at the bottom of this blog, and we’ll do some research.

Super Bowl XLVI will take place on Feb. 5, and Madonna will perform at halftime (zzz). I hope she won’t be allowed to play anything from 1992 to the present. Go ahead and make your Cowboys and Texans jokes about neither team being there if it makes you feel better.

I personally think it’ll be the Patriots and the Giants, a rematch of the 2007 Super Bowl.

In that game, I think the Giants will win 31-21.

Just a fun little prediction to throw out there.

Have we reached the promised land?

Houston sports has been one misery after another for the past 15 years.

When the University of Houston Cougars lost in the Conference USA title game and missed the chance of a BCS bowl game, I figured the Texans would soon have a similar fate. But the tide is turning in the town that was once known as Clutch City.

The Texans clinched a playoff berth through an AFC South championship on Sunday, and they did it in miraculous fashion.

Are you a believer in this team?

In other news, another area team will go head-to-head with an old foe for the Division II-4A state championship. Manvel, which squeaked past La Marque by three points in the Region III final, will take on Aledo, which won by a lot more than three points against the Cougars in last year's state final.

Who are you picking, Cougar fans? Can Manvel's elite defense stop Johnathan Gray?

I'd also like to acknowledge our scrappy basketball teams. Last year's basketball season was characterized by overwhelming talent that reached new heights. While that talent - as a whole - has taken a dip this year, the teams have had continued success through hard work and determination.

I'm so glad we're finally in the midst of district play so we can see our local teams go at it.

Also, please be sure to sign up for our College Bowl Picks contest. All you Pigskin Pick artists have had your practice with college football all season, and you should now take your shot at the bowl picks.
