Countdown to fun at Pleasure Pier begins

GALVESTON — Landry’s employees and their families put Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier workers to the test Sunday as they prepare for the official opening.

Tiki aldermen elected, no results from WCID #12
By TJ Aulds |  |
The final results are in from all but one of the elections held in Galveston County.

As we reported earlier, voters approved the infrastructure bonds for the Bacliff MUD.

In Tiki Island, Wayne Crozier and Tim Rainey were elected to the city's board of aldermen. Crozier had 227 votes while Rainey had 193. Duane Durham had 119 votes. The top two vote-getters are elected to the two vacant spots on the board.

The only results we don't have are the bond issue and fire fighter fees from WCID No. 12 which serves the Kemah and Clear Lake Shores area. The district's attorney promised we'd get the results.

Well so far, no results even though the polls have been closed fo three hours now. We had voters from Kemah and Clear Lake Shores calling us wondering what is up and the rumor mill has started.

UPDATE: OK, so the WCID No. 12 results were brought in to be counted after 10 p.m. They had to wait behind the other election counts. Both the issues on that ballot failed.

Partial Election Day results coming in
By TJ Aulds |  | (1)
We now have some partial results from Election Day voting in Galveston County. The only changes to the Tiki Island races are that Wayne Crozier picked up one vote and has 101, Tim Rainey still has 77 and Duane Durham now has 55 votes after picking up an extra supporter in the initial tabulations of Election Day voting.

County voters in general supported the state constitutional proposals. Prop 4, however, is trailing on a state and local level. In Galveston County 2,763 voters are opposed while 1,066 are for the proposal that would expand the creation of TIRZ.

Bacliff MUD bonds pass
By TJ Aulds |  |
Residents of the Bacliff Municipal Utility District approved giving the district the go ahead to seek $8.95 million in bonds to fund infrastructure improvements for the utility district.

Of the total of 168 people who voted, 95 voted for the bond measure while 73 voted against.

At the heart of the proposal is the funding for a 1.750 million gallon elevated storage tank. The district’s 250,000-gallon elevated tank is more than 30 years old and doesn’t meet the capacity level required by the state, MUD officials said.

The new tank also would be able to support future growth. The district has about 2,700 water connections in the community.

The bonds also would fund improvements to the pump station by replacing the three pumps with higher-capacity pumps.

There also would be about $350,000 set aside to improve the mainline coming out of the district’s water plant and move a water main along FM 646 west of state Highway 146.

Waiting for the results
By TJ Aulds |  |
It's a slow Election Night.

With only three local elections and the 10 state constitutional amendments on the ballot, not too many people are glued to their computers tonight waiting for results.

In Houston, there is at least a city council and mayoral election, although it appears all the incumbents are cruising to victory.

So what will happen here? Who will be the two new members of Tiki Island Board of Aldermen? Will the Kemah Fire Department get to ask for $15 a month from residents for fire service?

Will the bond issues on Bacliff MUD and WCID #12 pass?

Right now we don't know.

Update: Early candidates for COM board
By TJ Aulds |  | (2)
The filing period for candidates for the College of the Mainland board of trustees is still weeks away, but already two challengers have tossed their hats in the ring. Both men are from Santa Fe.

I have corrected who is running for which office. I had it in reverse during my first posting: Roney McCrary plans to run for the seat held by Trustee Donald Criss. while Wayne Miles plans to challenge Trustee Annette Jenkins.

McCrary is no stranger to politics. His wife Pat McCrary is on the Santa Fe city council.

Miles' wife Becky is the former Vice President for Finance at College of the Mainland.

No word if Jenkins and Criss plan to run for re-election. Filing for office begins first week in February.
