What happens in Nevada doesn’t always stay in Nevada. At least that’s what
Tony Buzbee, one of the county’s most prominent personal injury attorneys, claims he learned the hard way.
The Friendswood resident is suing Dredging Contractors of America and Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. for what he said is their illegal taping and dissemination of his remarks at private seminar in May last year.
Buzbee has a successful practice representing injured employees of dredging companies that operate in South Texas.
According to the lawsuit, Buzbee was asked to give a “plaintiff’s perspective” at an invitation-only Marine and Energy seminar in Nevada. (No word if the seminar was in Las Vegas.) Buzbee, according to the lawsuit, agreed to speak at the seminar after being assured that his remarks wouldn’t be taped.
But, according to the lawsuit, Oak Brook, Ill.-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, one of Buzbee’s litigation adversaries, sent an executive to the seminar to record the attorney’s talk with a hidden device. The taping, according to the lawsuit, was illegal under state and federal laws.
He also accuses Great Lakes Dredge & Dock of conspiring with the trade group Dredging Contractors of America, to circulate the tape to damage his career.
Buzbee has tapped Stephen D. Susman, of Susman Godfrey, to represent him in the matter.
Barry Holliday, a spokesman for Washington, D.C.-based Dredging Contractors of America, declined to comment.
Officials with Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. could not be reached for comment.
