Galveston police will enforce the city's 2010 Mardi Gras parking ban for cars that block oncoming traffic by parking on the north side of the 4900 block of Seawall Boulevard. Any cars parked by the no-parking signs will be towed by Friday, police say.
The deadliest, peacetime disaster in U.S. Coast Guard history was remembered Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, on the 30th anniversary of the sinking of the cutter Blackthorn. Twenty-three guardsmen died after the ship, which was stationed in Galveston, collided with the tanker Capricorn in Tampa Bay.
The Blackthorn left dry dock for its return to the island. There was minor damage from the collision, but the Capricorn's anchor pierced the Blackthorn's hull, causing it to capsize. Twenty-seven guardsmen survived. Ceremonies were held in Galveston and Tampa Bay.
Daniel James Gray, 56, was found guilty of capital murder in the Dec. 22, 2005, slaying of 4-year-old Kraig Jenkins in a Jamaica Beach apartment his ex-wfie, Barbara Bawarsky, used to cook methamphetamines. Bawarsky pleaded guilty to a lesser murder charge in her grandson's death for the possibility of parole. Gray was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In the video, Judge Wayne J. Mallia of Galveston's 405th District Court reads the jury's verdict and sentence. Prosecutor Bill Reed and Tom Stickler, one of Gray's defense attorneys, comment on the verdict issued Jan. 22.
TEXAS CITY — A 36-year-old Galveston man was in critical condition Monday after he was shot in the head outside a Texas City apartment. Police said the shooting came at the end of an argument between the victim and another man who was still on the loose Monday night, police said. Read more by clicking here.
